While we were still sinners, Christ died for us
Let me ask you something: have you ever had a family member, friend, or colleague who was never kind to you, and yet, when the moment came, you still chose to help them?
It’s not easy, is it?
I remember back in the days, when I was working at a call centre, I had a friend-colleague who constantly made things difficult for me. He was harsh, unkind, and, honestly, it often left me frustrated.
Then one day, he needed help. In that moment, instead of showing grace, I chose to turn away. Looking back, I’m not proud of it and wish my response had been more Christlike—but it was a very human one.
Thankfully, God is not like me. 😉
His agápē love is not dependent on how we treat Him. It’s unconditional, undeserved, and sacrificial. Where my love for my friend fell short that day, His love never does.
Romans 5:8 says:
But God demonstrates His own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.”
God’s love is not conditional, not transactional, and not based on our worthiness. He did not wait for us to become perfect, to clean up our lives, or to prove our devotion. Instead, while we were still in rebellion, lost in sin, and incapable of saving ourselves, Jesus laid down His life for us. This is true agápē love—selfless, sacrificial, and unconditional.
Let this sink in for a moment:
God knew every failure, every weakness, every hidden struggle in your life—and still chose to love you. He doesn’t love a future, “better version” of you; He loves you as you are. He proved it by sending Jesus to the cross. The cross is not just a symbol of suffering—it is the eternal declaration of how far God’s love will go to rescue you.
No matter where you are today, no matter what guilt or shame lingers in your heart, God’s love has already covered it. It is steadfast, eternal, and rooted in who He is, not in what you do.
