I no longer live, but Christ lives in me
Do you know why superhero movies are so popular?
Because we all love to think that if we were in the hero’s shoes, we would be as brave and strong as they are. We can identify with the good guy, and we like to believe there’s a hero hidden in all of us.
But what if we actually have more in common with the bad guy? Have you ever thought about that?🤔
This week, we’ve been studying the story of David and Goliath, and I have an unpopular opinion: we might have more in common with Goliath than with David.😳
Goliath is the personification of everything that is wrong with the human race. He was self-obsessed, he defied God, he had a huge ego and considered himself invincible.
He was basically a giant sinner, and it might be hard to admit, but so are we:
For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God – Romans 3:23 NIV
Goliath needed to be killed, and guess what, the Bible speaks of our death as well:
I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I now live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself for me. –Galatians 2:20
David killed Goliath, and we get to die with Jesus, who is also known as the Son of David (Matthew 1:1):
Or don’t you know that all of us who were baptised into Christ Jesus were baptised into His death? We were therefore buried with Him through baptism into death in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life. For if we have been united with Him in a death like His, we will certainly also be united with Him in a resurrection like His. – Romans 6:3-5
Our David doesn’t kill us with a slingshot but buries our old lives through baptism, so that we may rise again with Him.
Isn’t that amazing?
