Not by might nor by power, but by My Spirit, says the Lord of hosts.
Last week, Jenny wrote a beautiful series about the most famous battle in the Bible: David vs. Goliath. This week, we’re looking at the names of God, and David, as he is about to fight Goliath, calls God by His name: Adonai Tzva’ot—the Lord of hosts.
Then David said to the Philistine, “You come to me with a sword, with a spear, and with a javelin. But I come to you in the name of the Lord of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied.” – 1 Samuel 17:45
“Lord of Hosts” means that God is the supreme commander over all spiritual and earthly forces — from heavenly angels to human armies, and even the tiniest particles of creation. This name highlights His absolute power, authority, and sovereign control over all that exists.
In some Bible versions, it’s translated as the Lord of Heaven’s Armies.
No wonder David wasn’t afraid. He may have been facing a giant, but he knew the armies of heaven were on his side!
We, too, can call on the Lord of Hosts when we feel like we’re facing a battle.
Hannah did, when she was in bitter anguish (1 Samuel 1:10-11):
O Lord of hosts, if You will indeed look on the affliction of Your maidservant and remember me, and not forget Your maidservant, but will give Your maidservant a male child, then I will give him to the Lord all the days of his life, and no razor shall come upon his head.
Whatever battle you’re facing, call out to the Lord of Hosts and remember:
“Not by might nor by power, but by My Spirit,” Says the Lord of hosts. – Zechariah 4:6 NKJV
