We ought to lay down our lives for our brothers and sisters.
What’s the best thing anyone has ever done for you?
I hope this question brings back lots of memories of great gestures and amazing surprises that others have done for you.
But, I am sure that the one that tops them all is what Jesus has done for you!
But He was pierced for our transgressions, He was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was on Him, and by His wounds we are healed. We all, like sheep, have gone astray, each of us has turned to our own way; and the Lord has laid on Him the iniquity of us all. – Isaiah 53:5-6
In John 13:12 NIV we read how Jesus asks his disciples: “Do you understand what I have done for you?” He asked this question before He had died on the cross for their sins, but right after he had washed their feet during dinner.
The fact that He, their Rabbi, had washed their feet was a sign of great humility. He did it and asked them that question because He wanted to teach them something:
Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another’s feet. I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you. – John 13:14-15 NIV
Knowing that Jesus wants us to do as He has done for us, allow Him to ask you the same question He asked the disciples: Do you understand what I have done for you?
This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down His life for us. And we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers and sisters. – 1 John 3:16 NIV
Laying down your life for others starts with small, practical deeds (1 John 3:17-18).
Are there ways in which you can show others love today? It could be as simple as forwarding this email to a friend in need. Or perhaps something bigger? It may cost you something like time or money, but remember that Jesus did even more for you.
