I hope you had some time to rest over the holidays. If you haven’t already, I’m guessing your work or studies will resume tomorrow onwards.
As you get back into the routine of your daily life, I have one last great suggestion from the Book of Proverbs to start your year off well: resolve to stop being lazy 🥱.
“A little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to rest— and poverty will come on you like a thief and scarcity like an armed man.” – Proverbs 6:10-11
There are quite a few verses in the Book of Proverbs that promote (hard) work over laziness:
-
“All hard work brings a profit, but mere talk leads only to poverty.” – Proverbs 14:23
-
“Do not love sleep or you will grow poor; stay awake and you will have food to spare.” – Proverbs 20:13
- “Sluggards do not plow in season; so at harvest time they look but find nothing.” – Proverbs 20:4
I absolutely believe that God blesses hard work and a good work mentality. However, it is essential to notice the huge difference between rest and laziness. Rest is a gift from God and a Biblical principle that we can enjoy to His glory, but laziness is the indulgence of self.
Here’s how you can tell the difference:
-
Rest has a rhythm (e.g. night rest or sabbath rest), whereas laziness happens against our better judgement
-
Rest is refreshing; it makes us feel motivated and inspired, while laziness makes us even more lethargic
-
Rest reminds us of God and that there is more to life than work; laziness, for example, through endless scrolling on social media, takes us away from Him.
-
Rest leads to productivity, whereas laziness causes more procrastination.
friend I encourage you to stop being lazy but seek God’s rest instead! Take time to rest in His presence, but resist the urge to laze around longer than is good for you 😉.
