Choose great faith and godly character
I can say with complete confidence that I am incredibly blessed and grateful to have Cameron as my husband. Yes, we too have had our ups and downs in marriage, but I have experienced what a blessing it is to be married to a Godly, loving and selfless man.
Cameron helped me to stand firm during the trials we faced, and I couldn’t imagine weathering life’s storms with someone who doesn’t put his faith in God.
I can imagine Mary felt the same about Joseph.
Joseph and Mary were engaged, but before they could get married, Mary was pregnant (Matthew 1:18). Because of her presumed sin, Joseph could’ve demanded the death penalty for Mary (Leviticus 20:10). However, even though he believed she had betrayed him, he did not want to subject her to public shaming (Matthew 1:19). This is the first sign of his great character: he was not bitter or vengeful. He chose a loving response, even in his rejection.
He planned to divorce her quietly, but an angel appeared to him and said:
Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife, because what is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins. – Matthew 1:20-21
At this point, Joseph again had a choice: to believe the unbelievable–an immaculate conception–and face the judgment from friends, family and society by marrying a pregnant woman, or to take the easy way out and walk away.
Joseph stayed, which showed he had great faith.
If you’re not yet married, remember that after choosing to accept Jesus Christ as your Lord and Saviour, picking the right spouse is the most critical decision you will make in your life. Make sure you pick someone with great faith and godly character.
However, if you’re already married, like me, resolve to become the kind of spouse to your partner that Joseph was to Mary!
