I am a new creation
How do you define yourself?
If we’re lucky, people define us by our greatest achievements or best qualities.Depending on the setting, I’m often introduced as:
- “A well-known Hindi worship leader”
- “The guy who wrote ‘Hum Gaye Hosanna’”
- “Jenny’s husband”
But sometimes, society chooses to define us by our biggest struggle, worst failure, or least appealing trait instead. You’ve probably heard labels like:
- “The short guy”
- “The girl who got fired”
- “That loud child”
God chooses a different approach altogether. He doesn’t look at our past and won’t define us by our own merits. Instead, He looks at Jesus, and who we are in Him.
We aren’t who we once were, but we are made new! When we receive Christ, we become a totally new creation.
Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: the old has gone, the new is here! – 2 Corinthians 5:17 NIV
This is not something you have to work hard towards or earn with good behaviour. Becoming a new creation is as simple as putting off your old self and putting on your new self.
You were taught, with regard to your former way of life, to put off your old self, which is being corrupted by its deceitful desires; to be made new in the attitude of your minds; and to put on the new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness. – Ephesians 4:22-24 NIV
And whenever you find yourself falling back in old patterns, sins or bad habits. Go to Jesus in prayer and say, “Lord, here I am, would You make me new again? Amen.”
