I am a child of God
Finish this sentence: I am ________ .
There are countless possible ways to define who we are, and the truth is, we aren’t just one thing. Our identity is shaped by where we come from, our family, our upbringing, our culture, our education, how we look, what we’re good at, and many other factors.
But what defines us more than anything else is who we are in Christ. As Christians, there are several truths about our identity that, when grasped, change who we are, how we see ourselves, and how we perceive God.
First of all, remember this: you are a child of God.
See what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are! The reason the world does not know us is that it did not know Him. – 1 John 3:1 NIV
You may have heard the term “child of God” many times, but have you ever paused to grasp what it really means? It means we are part of God’s family. No other deity in any other religion considers its followers sons and daughters.
Paul explains how this works in Ephesians 1:4-5 NIV:
For He chose us in Him before the creation of the world to be holy and blameless in His sight. In love He predestined us for adoption to sonship through Jesus Christ, in accordance with His pleasure and will.
Being a son or daughter of God comes with several spiritual blessings (Ephesians 1:7-8):
- Redemption through His blood
- Forgiveness of sins
- Grace lavished on us
To embrace ourselves as children of God, we have to embrace God as Father. Jenny wrote a beautiful reading plan on this subject on the YouVersion Bible App.
You are a child of the Most High, isn’t that amazing?
