You will not have to carry it alone

Publication date Nov 25, 2025

I think the Beatles were onto something when they famously sang, “I get by with a little help from my friends.”

Our society is slowly becoming increasingly individualistic. So much so that simply asking for help from a friend can feel like a hurdle. We are encouraged to be self-sufficient; the less help you need from others, the more successful you are perceived to be.

But this is not a Biblical principle. The Bible encourages us to depend on others and to help each other.

Two are better than one […] If either of them falls down, one can help the other up. But pity anyone who falls and has no one to help them up.Ecclesiastes 4:9-10 NIV

Someone well aware that he needed help was Moses. He is considered one of the greatest leaders in the Bible, but he learned, sometimes the hard way, that he couldn’t do it all by himself.

He encountered several situations that were simply too much to handle.

When God called Moses to lead Israel out of slavery, Moses argued he couldn’t do it. He doubted the Israelites would obey him, contended his speech issues disqualified him and finally begged God: “Lord, please send someone else.” (Exodus 4:13 NIV).

God sent his brother, Aaron, along with him, and with Aaron’s help, Moses found the courage to face the Israelites, and later the Pharaoh (Exodus 4).

Moses was again stretched beyond his ability during the wilderness wandering. The people were serial complainers, complaining about water, the leadership, food options, and more. Moses lamented to God: “I cannot carry all these people by myself; the burden is too heavy for me” (Numbers 11:14 NIV).

God’s solution?

“Bring me seventy of Israel’s elders who are known to you as leaders and officials among the people […] They will share the burden of the people with you so that you will not have to carry it alone.” – Numbers 11:16-17 NIV

God may allow circumstances too hard to handle, so we learn to receive help from others.
