Remind yourself of what God has promised in His word
This week, we’re on a journey to discover how King David, while he was at the lowest point in his life, strengthened himself in the Lord (1 Samuel 30:6 NKJV).
One of the things King David did very well was reminding himself (and God) of the promises He had made. For example, in Psalm 132, David remembers:
The Lord swore an oath to David, a sure oath he will not revoke: ‘One of your own descendants I will place on your throne.’ – Psalms 132:11 NIV
David understood that holding on to God’s promises is an important tool for keeping your eyes fixed on God and not being swayed by circumstances.
Today’s key: go from compromises to promises.
When we fail to remain focused, we are more susceptible to distractions. That’s why in Hebrews it is written:
Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. – Hebrews 12:1-2 NIV
To strengthen yourself in the Lord, and to avoid falling into the temptations of this world, remind yourself of what God has promised in His word. I’ve made a list to help you.
God has promised:
- Wisdom when you need it (James 1:5)
- Provision according to His riches (Philippians 4:19)
- Forgiveness for your sins (1 John 1:9)
- Peace and patience through His Holy Spirit (Galatians 5:22-23).
- Healing for all your sickness (1 Peter 2:24).
- Protection from danger (Psalm 91:10).
- Deliverance from your fears (Psalm 34:4).
- Comfort in your pain (Revelation 21:4)
