Do you find true rest in Jesus?
Welcome to day 6 of our series on finding Jesus in the Old Testament. đ¤
So far, weâve seen Jesus reflected in characters (like David, Jonah, and Isaac), food (manna), and cities (of refuge), but did you know Jesus is also personified in a day of the week?
Guess which dayâŚ.
If you guessed Sunday, I must disappoint you.
But if you guessed sabbath, youâre right!!
Under the law in the Old Testament, Godâs people were required to keep the sabbath: one day of complete rest. The sabbath was considered holy, and no one was allowed to work, including servants, animals and foreigners. Rest was mandatory for all (Exodus 20:8-11).
In the Letter to the Colossians, Apostle Paul writes:
Therefore do not let anyone judge you by what you eat or drink, or with regard to a religious festival, a New Moon celebration or a Sabbath day. These are a shadow of the things that were to come; the reality, however, is found in Christ. â Colossians 2:16-17
In Jesus, we find the true sabbath, true rest. In Him, we donât have to slave away; our works cannot save us anyway. Only Jesus can. Jesus already completed the work on the cross when He said, âIt is finishedâ (John 19:30).
We now find our peace and rest in Christ, not just one day of the week, but every day of our lives. He is our Sabbath!
This is what the Sovereign Lord, the Holy One of Israel, says: âIn repentance and rest is your salvation, in quietness and trust is your strength.â â Isaiah 30:15
Take some time today (and every day) to rest in Jesus. If you need help, a good way to start is through Solitude and Silence.
