Do not let me be ashamed – Psalm 25:20

We are nearing the end of our series on Psalm 25, the psalm God put on my heart for me and my family for 2025. Today, we’re looking at Psalm 25:20-21:
“Guard my soul and save me; Do not let me be ashamed, for I take refuge in You. Let integrity and uprightness protect me, For I wait for You.” – Psalm 25:20-21
Throughout Psalm 25, we see David pray, repent, worship, and lament. Now, in these final verses, as the Psalm is coming to an end, David puts his hope in the Lord. He knows that only God provides true refuge and protection.
Hope is a powerful thing, a valuable asset. It is mentioned in the Bible as something to be rewarded or blessed with:
“Now may the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that you will abound in hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.” – Romans 15:13
Without hope, life loses meaning. The Bible describes people who lack hope as “asleep” and “grieving” (1 Thessalonians 4:13).
As Jenny and I navigate the journey of our son’s illness and disabilities, we’ve often wondered where people who go through similar suffering but don’t know God find the strength to carry on. For us, the only thing that enables us to bear the pain is the hope that God will heal Zac and the assurance that, ultimately, we will get to spend eternity in heaven with Jesus in glorified bodies without sickness and disabilities.
Being a Christian means we never have to face hopelessness because, like David, we can always keep placing our hope in God.
friend, have you been feeling hopeless lately? Look up to heaven as a physical sign that you focus your eyes on God and allow Him to fill your heart with hope.
I encourage you to pray Psalm 25 over yourself and your family every day this week.
What I do is that I add the name of our family in the final verse so it reads “Deliver the Mendes family, O God, from all our distress!” You can do the same and I will pray it with you: “Deliver friend, O God, from all their distress!”
