Is there someone you need to forgive?
We’ve come to the final day of our journey to find Jesus in the story of Joseph, and I’ve saved some of the best parallels between their lives for last!
When Joseph’s brothers come to Egypt, seeking food, they don’t recognise their brother (Genesis 42).
Even though his brothers had treated Joseph horribly when they were younger by selling him into slavery, Joseph didn’t hold a grudge. He sends them home with more than they asked for: the grain they bought, as well as the money they had brought to pay for it. Whatever they had asked for, Joseph had given for free (Genesis 42).
The second time his brothers met Joseph, he revealed himself to them. He wept so loudly while he embraced them, they didn’t know what to do. They’re terrified and riddled with guilt, but Joseph himself explains that it was all a part of God’s plan. Everything that happened to him brought him to the position where he could save them. There is not a shred of bitterness, resentment or unforgiveness towards his brothers in Joseph’s heart (Genesis 45).
Jesus was not recognised as King the first time He came to the earth, but just as with Joseph, His second coming is imminent, and when He does, every knee will bow, and every tongue confess that He is Lord.
Until then, He is gracious to us and gives us more than we deserve. Like Joseph with his brothers, Jesus does not hold our transgressions against us, but forgiveness runs freely and in abundance.
Jesus teaches us to do the same: forgive those who have sinned against us.
Bear with each other and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against someone. Forgive as the Lord forgave you. – Colossians 3:13
If Joseph could forgive his brothers for their horrible deeds, and Jesus forgives us for our sins, what is keeping you from forgiving those who have hurt you?
Who do you need to forgive today?
