We must be sensitive to those around us.

Publication date Mar 27, 2026

Have you ever heard the expression ‘saved by the bell’? It comes from the time when people would install a little bell in a grave, just in case someone was buried alive, they could ring the bell and be dug up before they suffocated to death.

Nowadays, we use it to describe a last-minute save. In that way, ‘saved by the bell’ definitely applies to the criminal who was crucified next to Jesus, except that Jesus was the “bell.”

We are punished justly, for we are getting what our deeds deserve. But this man [Jesus] has done nothing wrong.’ Then he said, ‘Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom. ’ Jesus answered him, ‘Truly I tell you, today you will be with me in paradise.’Luke 23:40-43 NIV

It reminds me of two things:

  1. People are most receptive when they are desperate. The man had nothing to lose, was totally aware of his own sinful nature and reached out to Jesus as a last resort.Sometimes it takes hitting rock bottom for people to realise how much they need rescuing. I have heard many powerful testimonies of people who were well-educated and lived successful lives in business or entertainment, but it wasn’t until their lives were in ruins that they were receptive to the gospel and the saving grace of God.

  2. We must be sensitive to those around us. Perhaps you meet a friend, colleague, family member or even a total stranger who is struggling. They might just be hungry to hear the gospel!

However, it is also good to remember that we can’t save anyone; only Jesus can, and He will save whoever wants to be saved. After all, there were two criminals, both desperate, both dying, but only one chose to accept Jesus; the other responded in pride.

Our job is to be sensitive to those around us and plant seeds of faith in their hearts. God will do the rest!

Hey! You are a Chamatkar.
