Our spiritual journey must lead through the desert or else our healing will be the product of our own will and wisdom. – Dan Allender
Have you ever been to a desert? 🏜️
I would love to visit the beautiful deserts of India one day, for example, in Rajasthan, Gujarat, or Ladakh. But I must admit, the desert scares me a bit, too. The heat, the lack of water. It probably wouldn’t be a comfortable journey, but it would definitely be a beautiful one.
In the Bible, we also read about several desert journeys.
- Hagar wandered in the wilderness with Ishmael until she met God (Genesis 21:14-19).
- Elijah travelled through the desert for 40 days to Mount Horeb (1 Kings 19:8-9), where God appeared to him.
- The Israelites wandered in the wilderness for 40 years after leaving Egypt (Numbers 14:20-35) before entering the promised land.
- Jesus was led by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil (Matthew 4:1) before He started His public ministry.
Time and again, we see that desert journeys precede great breakthroughs. That might sound exciting, but remember that the desert is daunting, uncomfortable, lonely and incredibly long.
The same is true for the spiritual deserts we must face as Christians, in our journey with God.
Our spiritual journey must lead through the desert or else our healing will be the product of our own will and wisdom. It is in the silence of the desert that we hear our dependence on noise. – Dan Allender in The Healing Path
If you are facing a dry, lonely and hard season spiritually, perhaps God has allowed you to enter the “desert.”
Don’t worry, there’s nothing wrong with a desert season. It’s a hard but beautiful journey with a breakthrough waiting on the other side!
