When I pray, coincidences happen - William Temple

Publication date Oct 17, 2025

We’re on day five of 7 good reasons to pray, and today, a very obvious one: because it works!

In addition to bringing my biggest problems, deepest desires, and honest confessions to God, I’ve developed a habit of asking Him for help with the little things throughout the day.

I often find myself whispering short, simple prayers underneath my breath, like, “Lord, please help me find a parking spot” or “Holy Spirit, would You remind me where I left my keys?”

More often than not, those prayers get answered instantly. Sometimes, before I’ve even finished praying, a parking space opens up or I spot my keys.

The same has been true for the bigger prayers I’ve prayed over the years. Looking back, I’m amazed to see how many times God has answered—often in ways I never could have imagined.

Of course, some might say, “That’s just a coincidence”, and there’s no way to scientifically prove that prayer works. But as former Archbishop of Canterbury William Temple once said:

“When I pray, coincidences happen; when I don’t, they don’t.”

I’ve found this to be true in my life.

The Bible also assures us that prayer is effective:

The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective. – James 5:16

And:

“If you believe, you will receive whatever you ask for in prayer.”Matthew 21:22

Today, I challenge you, instead of focusing on all the needs in your life and the prayers that are yet to be answered, take a look at all the “coincidences” that have already happened. Don’t forget to thank God for them.

Hey! You are a Chamatkar.
