The Lord your God goes with you.
We’re on day five of exploring Psalm 23, ‘The Lord is my shepherd,’ and yesterday we discussed that David’s soul needed restoring; in other words, God had allowed David’s soul to be broken.
Today, I want to dwell on that a little bit deeper because in the very next verse, David says:
Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil; For You are with me; Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me. – Psalms 23:4 NKJV
The same shepherd David wrote about in verses 1-3, who guided him to green pastures and still waters, is now leading David through the valley of the shadow of death. That doesn’t sound like a fun place!😬
David knew what this valley looked like. He had gone up in battle against his enemies several times. He knew what it was like to fight for his life, to fear death.
The Bible repeatedly shows that God doesn’t spare his people from battles, storms, famines, and other disasters.
The key in verse four is found in two little words: with me.
David says to God, “You are with me,” and that is all that matters. He chooses not to look at his circumstances or surroundings, but at the One who is guiding him.
The same applies to our lives today.
Are you facing troubles, battles, even a “valley of death?” Let these words from Moses encourage you:
Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the Lord your God goes with you; He will never leave you nor forsake you. – Deuteronomy 31:6 NIV
