I chose you and appointed you so that you might go and bear fruit
During your school days (or perhaps even later in life), were you ever the last to be picked out for something?
Maybe it was a childhood game when all of your friends were choosing teams, or as an adult, you got passed over for a promotion.
I was always among the last to be picked during PT class, and even today, those memories can sting.
If you feel the same, remember that one of the most powerful truths you can hold onto is that you have been chosen by Jesus.
Our sense of identity often gets shaken when we compare ourselves to others or feel we’re not as visible or influential as someone else. But comparison distorts truth.
Jesus never measures us against others—He calls us personally, because we are His first choice.
There were many people around Jesus during His earthly ministry, yet He intentionally chose His 12 disciples. That includes the lesser-known ones whose names are rarely mentioned. But their lack of prominence didn’t disqualify them; it highlighted the intentionality of Jesus’ selection. Jesus says:
“You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you so that you might go and bear fruit—fruit that will last…” – John 15:16 NIV
This verse reminds us that our calling is rooted in God’s initiative, not our performance. We didn’t earn our place in His family. We were invited into it. That truth reshapes how we view our purpose.
The next time you feel overlooked, remind yourself: I am not forgotten—I am chosen. When you feel insignificant, remind yourself: I have been appointed. My life is not random; it is intentional.
Fruitfulness in God’s kingdom doesn’t always look like public platforms or visible success. Sometimes it looks like consistency, faithfulness, prayer, encouragement, and quiet obedience. And those things matter deeply to God.
Cameron wrote a beautiful Bible reading plan on this subject called Platforms vs Pillars. You should give it a read!
