Though the righteous fall seven times, they rise again
We’re on day six of 7 Contemplations to end the year right, and today is about asking yourself this question: Where do I look back and wish that I had done things differently?
Now, don’t get me wrong, this is not a time to dwell on mistakes and get riddled with guilt. Just a few months ago, I wrote a reading plan on the YouVersion Bible app about stripping yourself from guilt.
Then why do we need to look back at things we wish we’d done differently? Because it is a chance to use hindsight and see what you can learn from this year’s more challenging moments.
Learning from your mistakes makes you wiser, stronger and more prepared for the future.
For though the righteous fall seven times, they rise again, but the wicked stumble when calamity strikes. – Proverbs 24:16 NIV
Covering up your mistakes, on the other hand, will lead to repeating them.
While contemplating this question, ask yourself if there is anything left to do about the situation. Do you need to apologise to someone you hurt? Maybe ask forgiveness? Are there sins to be confessed?
Whoever conceals their sins does not prosper, but the one who confesses and renounces them finds mercy. – Proverbs 28:13 NIV
Dealing with your mistakes will lead to greater maturity, less guilt and ultimately more peace.
This is what the Sovereign Lord, the Holy One of Israel, says: “In repentance and rest is your salvation, in quietness and trust is your strength.” – Isaiah 30:15 NIV
We all have things we wish we had done differently, but the beautiful thing is that God, in His unending mercy, doesn’t hold it against us. Instead, He allows us to use those instances to grow and learn.
