Are you still holding on to God's promises?
Are there promises on your life you’ve been waiting to see fulfilled for a long time? Or dreams that just don’t seem to come within reach. You’re in good company!
David had to wait for a long time before the anointing the Prophet Samuel had placed on his life came to pass.
Scholars estimate it could have been anywhere between 14 and 22 years from the time Samuel anointed David to the time he actually took the throne.
During that time, David faced countless trials. First, he continued being a shepherd boy despite having received the greatest anointing in history. Then he had to serve his brothers on the battlefield. He quickly rises to fame after defeating Goliath (1 Samuel 17), only to then be persecuted by an insanely jealous king (1 Samuel 18-19). His first wife is taken away from him, and David lives as a fugitive in the wilderness with an army of outcasts. He faces danger, betrayal and constant pursuit, wanted dead by the king (1 Samuel 20–27). He is almost stoned by his own men at Ziglag (1 Samuel 30) and loses his best friend, Jonathan, before he finally becomes king, but not over all of Israel, just a small part: Judah.
What a journey.
It reminds me of another King whose kingdom has been foretold and is highly anticipated, but has materialised only in part: King Jesus.
Jesus’ Kingship was announced by the angel Gabriel, who visited Mary (Luke 1:26-33). Jesus was welcomed as King during His triumphal entry into Jerusalem (Matthew 21), and just as David defeated Goliath, Jesus defeated sin and death on the cross.
Despite all the above, we still don’t see the Kingdom of God fully present on the earth today. But that will change!
Jesus is coming again, and when He does, He won’t appear as a baby, but as a King, riding on a white horse, with a heavenly army, and wearing a robe that says ‘King of Kings and Lord of Lords’ (Revelation 19:11-16). His kingdom here on earth will be firmly established and never-ending (Revelation 11:15).
While we wait for Jesus to return, let’s not forget to worship Him as our King!
