Open my eyes that I may see wonderful things in Your law - Psalms 119:18 NIV
I have a pair of sunglasses that I love; they’re so comfortable that sometimes I forget I’m wearing them and leave them on, even though the sun isn’t shining anymore.
But then, when I finally take them off, the whole world looks so much brighter and more colourful. It’s almost as if I have a brand-new vision.
Does it ever happen to you?
The same can happen to our spiritual eyes. Our vision can get dull and blurred when we fix our eyes on the wrong things. But God wants to renew our sight, giving us eyes to see not only what the world sees but also what He sees.
When Paul first encountered God, he turned blind (Acts 9). Then, when God called Paul to become His apostle, “something like scales fell from Saul’s eyes, and he could see again” (Acts 9:18 NIV).
I can imagine this experience helped Paul to understand the importance of seeing clearly, and it made even more sense when God gave him the direct assignment to go to the Gentiles and:
…open their eyes and turn them from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan to God, so that they may receive forgiveness of sins and a place among those who are sanctified by faith in me. – Acts 26:18 NIV
God wasn’t talking about their physical eyes, but their spiritual ones. The eyes that distinguish right from wrong and darkness from light.
Later on, in the book Ephesians, Paul prays this over his friends:
I pray that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which He has called you, the riches of His glorious inheritance in His holy people. – Ephesians 1:18 NIV
You, too, can ask God to renew the eyes of your heart so you can see Him clearly again. You can use the words from Psalms 119:18 NIV:
