Let go of control and trust God instead
How would you describe yourself as a child?
I don’t know how I would describe myself, but if you ask my mom, she’ll say I was cute but definitely a handful.😅
Moses is described as a “beautiful child” in Exodus 2:2. But wait a second, who wrote Exodus?? That’s right, Moses did! He described himself as a beautiful child. I always find that funny.🤭
Moses was born during a time when the Pharaoh had decreed that all baby boys born to Israelite women had to be killed.
As many of you know, Cameron and I lost our son, Zac, about a year ago. So I can imagine the pain these mothers must have felt, seeing their babies killed in front of their eyes.
Moses’ mother, Jochebed, knew the tragedy that awaited her, and she hid her son for as long as she could (Exodus 2:2-3, Hebrews 11:23).
When she could no longer hide him, she did something incredibly brave but unbelievably scary: she put her three-month-old son in a papyrus basket and laid it in the reeds of the River Nile. Perhaps she knew where the Pharaoh's daughter would bathe, and maybe it was her plan for the princess to find him. Nevertheless, the risk was enormous. The Nile River is known for its crocodiles; it's not a safe place for a baby.
The story ends well, because Moses is found. But I can’t help but wonder how scared and desperate Jochebed must’ve been to make such a move.
By placing her son, her treasure, in the basket and on the river, she essentially let go of control over the outcome and trusted God instead.
Sometimes we need to do the same.
Are there things in your life–situations, relationships, maybe a job–that make you feel desperate? Do you feel like you can’t hold on any longer?
Release it to God, as Jochebed did. Hand the entire situation over to Him and let Him take control.
