Humility is… Rewarding.
Sometimes it is nice to receive clear and concise instructions on what is expected of you. The Bible is filled with so much inspiration and countless ways to live a better, more Godly, holy life that at times it can feel overwhelming.
I like the simple three-fold plan put forward by the prophet Micah:
What does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God. – Micah 6:8 NIV
This week, we’re going to focus specifically on the last part: what it means to walk humbly.
Now, I know humility is not the most exhilarating topic. I can imagine that reading about freedom, redemption, or healing would be much more exciting. I get it. It’s one of those subjects we’d rather avoid because, let’s face it, our own lack of humility can be confronting.
We all want to be more powerful, but becoming more humble is less exciting.
As we begin this subject, let me start by giving you some incentive. Apart from the fact that the Bible instructs us to be humble, it also provides compelling reasons to pursue humility. Humility is a pathway to blessing and brings incredible rewards:
- Humility is the fear of the Lord; its wages are riches and honor and life. – Proverbs 22:4 NIV
- Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will lift you up. – James 4:10 NIV
- Wisdom’s instruction is to fear the Lord , and humility comes before honor. – Proverbs 15:33 NIV
- For the Lord takes delight in his people; he crowns the humble with victory. – Psalms 149:4 NIV
As we step into this week, let’s get excited about humility!
Chances are that if you are reading this and thinking, “Humility, that’s so boring!” you probably need it more than you realise 😉, and I challenge you to stick with it.
And you have the best teacher! Jesus is inviting you:
“Learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.” – Matthew 11:29 NIV
Are you in? See you tomorrow!
